La pose de la quille du Titanic avait eu lieu le 31.03.1909 au chantier Harland & Wolff en Irlande du Nord. Ce vapeur avait été équipé avec un maximum d'élégance et de luxe, pour servir dans les lignes transatlantiques de la White Star Line. Le lancement du Titanic avait eu lieu deux ans plus tard, le 31.05.1911. Avec ses 269,04 m de long, ses 28,19 m au maître bau et un tonnage de 46.329 BRT, il était en 1912 le plus grand navire au monde. Le commandant Edward John Smith avait fait l'échange de l'Olympic vers le Titanic tout spécialement pour cette croisière inaugurale. Le mercredi 10.04.1912, il quittait Southampton, des escales à Cherbourg et à Queenstown (Irlande) complétaient sa croisière vers New York (USA). Le voyage s'est effectué sans problème jusqu'au dimanche 14.04.1912 vers 23H40 (heure de bord), quand la vigie chargée de repérer des icebergs a sonné la cloche d'alerte. Le bâtiment a heurté un iceberg par bâbord, et a sombré deux heures quarante minutes plus tard dans les flots glacés. 712 personnes seulement survécurent à la catastrophe.

The keel of the Titanic was laid on 31 March 1909 at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland. This steamship was equipped with the utmost elegance and luxury to serve on the White Star Line's transatlantic routes. The Titanic was launched two years later, on 31 May 1911. With a length of 269.04 metres, a beam of 28.19 metres and a tonnage of 46,329 GRT, it was the largest ship in the world in 1912. Captain Edward John Smith had transferred from the Olympic to the Titanic especially for this maiden voyage. On Wednesday 10 April 1912, it left Southampton, with stops in Cherbourg and Queenstown (Ireland) completing its cruise to New York (USA). The voyage proceeded without incident until Sunday, 14 April 1912, at around 11:40 p.m. (ship's time), when the lookout responsible for spotting icebergs sounded the alarm bell. The ship struck an iceberg on its port side and sank two hours and forty minutes later in the icy waters. Only 712 people survived the disaster.
