Everything in the Renault 4 was revolutionary for a car in its segment. This four-cylinder economy car with a sealed, maintenance-free cooling circuit boasted front-wheel drive (a first for Renault on a passenger car), a platform to which the body was bolted, four wheels with independent suspension, four full seats with removable front and rear bench seats, and most especially a
hatchback which greatly facilitated the loading of the boot. With the textile folding roof, the R4 driver has the opportunity to let the wind blow through his hair when the weather is nice.

Lorsque la nouvelle petite Renault fit sa première apparition au Mondial de l'Automobile de Paris fin 1961, elle fut saluée comme révolutionnaire ! Le constructeur au losange y dévoila non seulement un nouveau concept, mais aussi une nouvelle approche de l'automobile.
Tout dans la Renault 4 était révolutionnaire pour une voiture de son segment. Cette voiture économique quatre cylindres, dotée d'un circuit de refroidissement scellé et sans entretien, bénéficiait d'une traction avant (une première pour Renault sur une voiture particulière), d'un châssis-cabine, d'une carrosserie boulonnée, de quatre roues à suspension indépendante, de quatre sièges avec banquettes avant et arrière amovibles, et surtout d'un hayon facilitant grandement le chargement du coffre. Grâce à sa capote en toile, le conducteur de la R4 pouvait profiter du vent dans sescheveux par beau temps.
