GAZ = Gorkowskiy Awtomobilniy Zavod (GAZ).
In the course of the first five-years plan of the Soviet Union the automobile work Gorky was founded in the year 1932. The base of the automotive manufacture was a license of Ford. More than 40,000 exemplars of the GAZ-A were manufactured from 1932 to 1936. Of the successor model GAZ-M1, more than 62,000 exemplars were manufactured from 1935 to 1943. Both were based on a license of Ford. The GAZ-64 was manufactured beginning in August 1941 and manufacturing of the successor GAZ-67 started in 1943. Both were based on the American Bantam BRC 40. More than 5,500 vehicles were manufactured until the end of World War II. Besides these vehicles there were several experimental vehicles and low volume production models.
Furthermore, GAZ manufactured two- and three-axle lorries of the 1.5 ton and 2.5 ton payload classes. Technically they were based on Ford lorries of the early 1930s. Despite the lack of all wheel drive they had good cross-country mobility. Under Russian road conditions they were very durable. In addition, GAZ manufactured parts for the Komsomoletz and a whole series of armoured vehicles and tanks.
