Developed in the 1930's in parallel with the Cruiser Mk. I (A9), the A10 was intended to serve the role of a heavy infantry tank, which it could not fulfill and was therefore used as a heavy cruiser tank.
It came in three versions
- Mk. II (40 mm 2-pounder cannon, 1 coaxial Vickers machine gun)
- Mk. IIA (40 mm 2-pounder cannon, 1 coaxial Besa MG, 1 Besa bow MG)
- Mk. IIA CS (94 mm Howitzer, 1 coaxial Besa MG, 1 Besa bow MG)
With its 150 hp engine, it reached a speed of just 26 km/h on the road and 13 km/h off-road.
A total of 175 Mk. IIs were produced. It was used in France at the beginning of the Second World War and later also in North Africa and Greece. However, it did not deliver satisfactory results and was later replaced by the Cruiser Mk. III (A13). Nevertheless, the German Wehrmacht used captured vehicles in its ranks under the designation Kreuzer Panzerkampfwagen Mk. II 742(e).
