The American Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat carrier-based fighter entered service in 1943 to replace the F4F Wildcat. It was used by the U.S. Navy until the end of World War II, becoming a major player in the Pacific theater. Designed to counter the Japanese Zero, it was equipped with the powerful 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, which gave it high speed and excellent flight performance. Armed with six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns mounted in the wings, it proved, in the hands of trained pilots, extremely effective in both air superiority missions for fleet defense and close air support and ground attack missions.
