The Messerschmitt Bf 109 monoplane fighter is undoubtedly one of the most famous fighter aircraft of World War II and can be considered one of the symbols of the Luftwaffe.

Throughout the conflict, it was regularly improved in terms of engines and armament to remain competitive with more modern aircraft and superior flight performance. Along with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, it formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter units. The most celebrated German aces flew the Bf 109, achieving a significant number of aerial victories. Among them were the pilots of the renowned Jagdgeschwader 52, as well as the World War II's highest-scoring ace: Erich Hartmann.
