Model Size: 25.8 cm
The Macchi MC 200, designed by the renowned engineer Mario Castoldi, represented a significant evolution in the production of Italian fighter aircraft.
Compared to the Fiat CR.32 and Fiat CR.42 biplanes, which still formed the backbone of Italian fighter units at the beginning of World War II, the Macchi MC 200, along with its contemporary the Fiat G.50, was distinguished by its monoplane configuration and all-metal structure. Its 14-cylinder Fiat A.74 RC.38 twin-row radial engine developed 840 horsepower, allowing the Macchi MC 200 to reach 500 km/h. However, compared to equivalent Allied fighters, the Macchi MC 200 proved relatively underpowered and, above all, lightly armed. The armament consisted of just two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns mounted above the distinctive engine cowling. In later versions, two 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns were added in the wings. The aircraft was used by the Regia Aeronautica on the main fronts of World War II: in Africa, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and Russia.
