Le P-51 fut conçu en 1940 à la demande de la Grande-Bretagne. Le prototype fut construit en 120 jours seulement. C'est la Royal Air Force qui lui attribua le surnom de « Mustang ». En décembre 1943, les P-51B entrèrent en service au sein du 354e Groupe de chasse de la 9e Air Force en Angleterre. La majeure partie des P-51B/C opérationnels furent affectés aux 8e et 9e Air Forces en Angleterre, tandis qu'un nombre plus restreint participa aux combats avec les 12e et 15e USAAF en Italie et dans les régions avoisinantes. Le P-51B/C fut la version principale de décembre 1943 à mars 1944, date à laquelle le P-51D commença à apparaître en nombre au sein de la 8e Air Force. Cependant, le P-51B/C resta prédominant jusqu'au milieu de l'année 1944 et demeura en service jusqu'à la fin du conflit.
