Le P-47 était un chasseur d'altitude imposant (7 tonnes) et très puissant, communément appelé « Jug ». Le projet débuta en 1939 et les premières livraisons eurent lieu fin 1942. Au total, 15 683 exemplaires de ce chasseur américain furent construits durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
