Le Me 262 fut le premier et unique avion de chasse à réaction pleinement opérationnel développé pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En raison des caractéristiques de pilotage particulières d'un avion à réaction par rapport à un avion à hélices, une conversion biplace pour l'entraînement s'avéra nécessaire. Désigné Me 262B-1a, cet appareil était équipé d'un second siège pour l'instructeur, de doubles commandes complètes et de deux réservoirs de carburant externes. Le besoin d'une version de chasse de nuit primant sur le temps supplémentaire requis pour les modifications, il fut décidé d'adopter la version d'entraînement en y ajoutant le radar FuG 218 Neptun et le détecteur thermique FuG 350 Naxos, permettant ainsi au chasseur de suivre les gaz d'échappement des avions britanniques. Cet appareil fut désigné Me 262B-1a/U1, et les premiers exemplaires furent livrés à l'unité expérimentale de chasse nocturne Kommando Welter entre février et mars 1945. Cette unité participa à la défense de Berlin et devint la NJG 11, mais à la fin de la guerre, elle n'avait reçu qu'une douzaine de ces nouveaux avions à réaction.

The Me262 was the first and only fully operational jet-powered fighter aircraft developed during World War II. Because of the special handling characteristics of a jet-powered aircraft verses a propeller driven one, a two seat training conversion became necessary. This was designated the Me262B-1a, and was equipped with a second seat for the instructor along with full dual controls, and a pair of external fuel tanks. The need for the night fighter version out weighed the extra time it took to complete the modifications, so therefore it was decided to simply adopt the trainer version by adding the FuG218 Neptun radar system and the FuG350 Naxos heat sensing unit, which allowed the fighter to track the exhaust of the British planes. This was designated the Me262B-1a/U1, and the first of these aircraft were delivered to the experimental night fighting unit Kommando Welter during February - March of 1945. This unit served in the defense of Berlin and became NJG11, but by the end of the war, they had only received a dozen of these new jet aircraft
