Le char KV-3, doté d'un blindage frontal de 120 mm et de 90 mm de blindage latéral, offrait une protection globale encore plus efficace que celle des chars Tiger allemands, apparus près d'un an plus tard. Afin d'améliorer sa puissance de feu, le KV-3 fut équipé du canon de 107 mm B-34 de la Marine, puis modernisé en ZIS-6.
