Le 9 septembre 1938, suite aux premiers essais du châssis D.W., le décret n° 6 autorisa le Heeres Waffenamt à poursuivre le développement d'un Panzer de 30 tonnes. Avec une limite de poids de 30 tonnes, un Panzer armé d'un canon de 7,5 cm Kw.K L/24 pouvait être conçu avec un blindage de 50 mm à l'avant et sur les côtés. Cette épaisseur de blindage était la norme établie pour une protection efficace contre les obus perforants non bouchés tirés par le canon antichar allemand de 3,7 cm Pak L/45. Officiellement baptisé Panzerkampfwagen VI (7,5 cm) le 31 octobre 1940, il conserva le nom de code D.W. ainsi que la nouvelle désignation VK 30.01.

On 9 September 1938, following initial testing of the D.W. chassis, In 6 authorized the Heeres Waffenamt to continue with the development of a Panzer in the 30 ton class. With a 30 metric ton weight restriction, a Panzer armed with a 7.5 cm Kw.K L/24 could be designed with armor protection of 50 mm on both the front and sides. Armor plate 50 mm thick was the established standard for effective protection against uncapped armor-piercing shells fired by the German 3.7 cm Pak L/45 anti-tank gun. Officially named the Panzerkampfwagen VI(7.5 cm)by 31Octorber 1940,it retained the design code name of D.W. along with the new code designation VK 30.01.
