Face à des problèmes de protection insuffisants du blindage du KV-1 de type 1941, les ingénieurs ont entrepris une série d'améliorations. L'épaisseur du blindage de la tourelle a été augmentée d'environ 75 mm à l'arrière. À partir du KV-1 présenté en bas à gauche de la page, est né ce modèle équipé d'un canon allemand de 7,5 cm L/43 et d'une coupole de chef de char allemande. Le blindage était recouvert d'une peinture de camouflage allemande.
