Pour remédier au problème de l'insuffisance de blindage du KV-1 modèle 1941, déjà lourdement blindé, il fut décidé de porter l'épaisseur du blindage de la tourelle à 75 mm. Comme la production de plaques de blindage d'une telle épaisseur faisait alors défaut, une solution provisoire fut adoptée : l'utilisation de plaques de blindage boulonnées de 25 mm d'épaisseur, fixées directement à l'extérieur de la tourelle et à d'autres parties de la caisse. Ce type de char était généralement désigné sous le nom de KV-1 "Ehkranami".
