L'un des derniers projets de la longue lignée des ingénieux chars de nouvelle génération allemands de la série E, l'E-100 devait servir de base à une toute nouvelle lignée de véhicules blindés super-lourds. Le Salamander, basé sur le châssis de l'E-100, fut développé pour devenir le chasseur de chars de nouvelle génération. Les prototypes furent produits à Henschel, à Haustenbeck, dans la banlieue de Paderborn. Son armement principal se composait d'un canon antichar de 170 mm capable de tirer des obus perforants jusqu'à quatre kilomètres de portée. Un canon coaxial de 75 mm, similaire à celui du Maus, était prévu, mais fut abandonné afin d'offrir plus d'espace à l'équipage et aux munitions. La forme du Salamander, intégrant un compartiment de combat au sein de la caisse principale, rappelle celle du Jagdpanther, avec une inclinaison frontale suffisante pour obtenir 200 mm de blindage frontal. Grâce à un moteur de 1 200 ch et un nouveau convertisseur de couple Mekydro, une vitesse de pointe proche de 40 km/h était envisageable.

One of the last projects in the long line of German ingenious "E-series" next generation tanks, the E-100 was planned to be the basis for a whole new line of super heavy armored vehicles. The Salamander was based on the E-100 chassis, and was developed to be the next generation tank destroyer. The prototypes were produced in Henschel of Haustenbeck in the suburbs of Paderborn. The main armament consists of a 170mm anti-tank gun capable of firing armor piercing projectiles at ranges up to four kilometers. A 75mm co-axial gun similar to the Maus was planned but was done away with to give more room for the crew and ammunition. The shape that integrated a fighting compartment within the main body is reminiscent of the Jagdpanther, with the front having enough angles of inclination to produce 200mm of frontal armor.With a 1,200HP engine and a new torque converter from Mekydro, a projected speed closer to 40km/hour was attainable.
