4) Magic : The Gathering (MTG) : Ice Age  (GLOSSY DECK SERIE) :

Magic the Gathering (MTG) Ice Age glossy serie logo pic

© 1993-2025 Wizards of the Coast LLC, a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc.

Ice Age (Glossy Pre-release Tournament Deck Serie).

Ice Age glossy Deck Serie are the really first cards printed for the Ice Age Edition.

Note : Find that when I was opening 2 differents Ice Age Tournament deck when I was selling them in store years ago with Carta Mundi return request....

Quality : Glossy (beter than 4Th Alternate) / cards seems to be as well slightly more thick / more easy to recoignize with black color cards  : black mana color  : more grey/blue), copyright as well more blue / quite easy to recognize when you're used to MTG cards, when you compare two of the same type of card (same card name) and place them next to each other. The glossy edition card stands out directly from the standard edition / there's sometimes (very rare) some manual annotations by the printer on cards (usually in silver or gold colors) / only in english decks.

Tournament-Deck (only) :

Glossy Ice Age tournament deck and standard owns the same ISBN who's : 1-880992-64.7 (WOTC Product WOC6506) but :

-For one, there's the presence of the "old Garfield Games Logo", starter Deck priced USD 7.95 (first printing)

-For the other, no "Garfield Games Logo" and price USD 8.95 (second printing including glossy cards).

This latest version is the hard to find Glossy Ice Age tournament- deck, but not all of them because it seems to be in the early printing deck production (deck with one pull strip close to the top or the other has it further down closer to the middle of the deck).

Dispatch for stores pre-release tournaments.

It's seems that round 5% of thoses total decks are affected with this printing process.

The deck's rarity breakdown is:

Starter deck : 60 cards (3 rare / 9 uncommon / 26 common / 22 basic lands).

So a rare Glossy Ice Age is really rare in a certain way.

Ice Age (Glossy Tournament deck Serie) Explanations :

Ice Age glossy Deck Serie are the really first cards printed for the Ice Age Edition.

This series contains the first Ice Age preconstructed deck printed by Carta Mundi as test print (for the Ice Age Prerelease tournaments).

Before the 4th Edition was printed by Carta Mundi, some test editions were carried out at WOTC's request by another publisher, the United States playing cards Corporation. This series is called Alternate 4th Edition, and can be found at this link.
At the same time, in order to compare the quality of these cards printed by this other publisher, similar tests were also requested from their usual printer, Carta Mundi, but for the Ice Age Edition.
As the production schedule for Ice Age had already been scheduled for June 1995, just after the release of the 4th Edition (April 1995), WOTC needed to be certain of the production schedule defined by this or that publisher.
The aim was therefore to compare the quality printed at the same time by “United States playing cards Corporation” and “Carta Mundi”.
But given the disappointing results of this test printer (USPCC) and the comparative results of Carta Mundi's printing Ice Age  tournaments decks (also glossy, but better), it was decided to stop both types of printing.
Despite the withdrawal of 4th Edition decks from the market (4th Edition decks printed by USPCC), some had of course already been distributed on the market.
The same was true of Carta Mundi's first Ice Age tournaments decks, but in much smaller quantities than the 4th Edition Alternate.
This explains why Ice Age tournaments decks have two different kind of layout.

Despite the withdrawal from the market of these decks (4th Alternate) and Ice Age (Glossy by Carta Mundi) just before the start of these pre-releases, some of these decks were already in use before official tournaments.
Quantities of Ice Age decks were much rarer, as they were only distributed to certain national stores taking part in these Ice Age pre-releases.
These decks were therefore returned to Carta Mundi by the participating stores, before being quickly replaced by the normal edition so that the pre-releases could take place on time.
The Ice Age Glossy cards in these decks are therefore much rarer than the 4th alternate, but of better Glossy quality. And to top it all off, some of these cards have hand-encoded annotations from the Carta Mundi printer (usually card number on a printing sheet).

This is probably the most far-fetched story to emerge from MTG's publishing problems.

Notes about the shop section just down :

-I have only listed the rare / U and C cards that I own. Pics show are regular Ice Age ones, if it's notify a number in the title, you'll have a pic of the Ice Age glossy one with this printer manual annotation.

-Grading on Ice Age Glossy cards is SPECIFIC due to the glossy type card.
