Le Takao (高雄), construit de 1927 à 1932, a été la première unité de sa classe, la quatrième classe de croiseurs lourds mise en service par la Marine impériale japonaise. Avec un déplacement standard officiel (mais sous-évalué) de 9 850 tonnes, il associait une artillerie puissante, une protection satisfaisante et une grande vitesse. Comme ses trois sister-ships, il prit une part active aux opérations de la guerre du Pacifique. Mis hors de combat fin octobre 1944, il a fini sabordé par la Royal Navy, après la capitulation japonaise.

The Takao (高雄), built from 1927 to 1932, was the first unit of its class, the fourth class of heavy cruisers commissioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy. With an official (but underestimated) standard displacement of 9,850 tons, it combined powerful artillery, adequate protection, and high speed. Like its three sister ships, it took an active part in operations during the Pacific War. Decommissioned in late October 1944, it was eventually scuttled by the Royal Navy after the Japanese surrender.
